Our History
Samaritan Counseling was established in 1976 initially as a satellite of the Abilene Pastoral Care and Counseling Center. A therapist from Abilene came to San Angelo once a week to see clients. Sessions were held either in the clients' homes or in borrowed offices.
By 1978, the Center had grown and was able to purchase a residence at 2001 Colorado which was converted into offices and was to be Samaritan's home for the next thirty years. It was also in 1978 that the Center became a 501c3 nonprofit agency as designated by the IRS. In 1986, we affiliated with the Samaritan Institute and added Samaritan to the name, and has been accredited by the Institute.
Samaritan is a faith-based agency where counselors offer faith-sensitive therapy regardless of clients' individual religious beliefs. Our licensed therapists are trained never to impose their own religious beliefs on others but rather to use them to meet their clients wherever they might be in this dimension of their lives.
Through the years, even during lean financial years, Samaritan has maintained a high standard of professional ethics. Today, the Center is the only nonprofit outpatient basic mental health services provider in the San Angelo and the greater 14-county Concho Valley offering a wide range of services.
The local MHMR is limited by legislative mandate to treating clients with three diagnoses: depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. People suffering from other types of mental illness must seek help elsewhere and often turn to Samaritan Counseling Center. MHMR and Samaritan work very closely together to assure that people in need of mental health outpatient services are served.
In late 2007, Samaritan was asked to assume operational responsibilities for Meet in the Middle, a 3-fold agency offering court ordered supervised child visitations and exchanges, the court-mandated parenting classes known as For Kids' Sake, and the after-school program for elementary students called Rollercoasters©.
Samaritan no longer offers supervised visitations, supervised exchanges or Rollercoasters. The Center does offer the 4-hour parenting class, For Kids' Sake. Please call 325/944-2561 for a class schedule or to register.
